Exploring climate-resilient coffee species for the future of coffee - Organized by HyCoffee
Fri, 26.09 2025 • 16:00—17:00 • Main Stage
The global coffee sector is at a turning point: climate change threatens production and farmer livelihoods, demanding urgent innovation. This talk explores how Excelsa coffee from Uganda—climate-resilient, high-yielding, and uniquely flavored—can help secure the future of specialty coffee. The event begins with an impulse presentation on the impact of climate change on coffee by Prof. Dr. Christoph Gornott, leader of the Adaptation in Agricultural Systems group at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK). Speakers: - Charlotte Schmidt, Co-Founder of HyCoffee, joined in 2022 inspired by the vision of strengthening farmers’ climate resilience through trade-based development. HyCoffee imports climate-resilient beans, working closely with farmers, processors, and roasters. She leads strategy and partnerships, building on her background in international development, NGOs, UN agencies, and impact investment. Charlotte studied Psychology and Development Studies. - Sophie von Loeben, Co-Founder of HyCoffee and researcher at PIK, studies climate impacts on coffee value chains. Previously, she advised governments on agricultural adaptation with the United Nations. At HyCoffee, she bridges research and entrepreneurship, leading the science agenda and working closely with farmers. - Tony Mugoya, CEO & Managing Director of the Ugandan Coffee Farmers Alliance (UCFA), heads a farmer-owned body that supports cooperatives across Uganda. Under his leadership, UCFA has advanced production practices, processing factories, coffee labs for quality profiling, farmer training, post-harvest handling, and market access, empowering farmers to capture more value. - Prof. Dr. Christoph Gornott, agricultural scientist at PIK and Chair of Agroecosystem Analysis and Modelling at the University of Kassel, conducts interdisciplinary research on food security and resilience in tropical agricultural systems, investigating climate impacts and adaptation strategies. Together, the speakers will showcase how farmer-led innovation, science, and climate-resilient crops like Excelsa can shape a sustainable future for coffee.

Fri, 26.09 2025 • 13:30—14:00 • Main Stage
In 2022, when Matchasome was founded, no one expected matcha to become a serious alternative to coffee. Today, it’s not only a daily ritual but also a major trend shaping coffee shops and cafés worldwide. But matcha is not just matcha – quality makes all the difference. This talk introduces Matchasome, Germany’s first organic ceremonial-grade matcha café and tea brand from Berlin, and explores how a personal passion transformed into a thriving community brand with over 200 B2B supporters in hospitality and gastronomy. Attendees will learn where our matcha comes from, why it represents the highest quality in tea culture, and how its growing fanbase, known for being highly selective, continues to drive the rise and shine of matcha. Speaker: Julia Winkels Julia Winkels is a Berlin-based female founder and communications expert with a passion for building connections and shaping contemporary culture. In 2022, she co-founded Matchasome together with her childhood friend Nina Bröer, turning their shared love for matcha into one of Germany’s most exciting tea ventures. What began as a mission to make premium matcha more accessible has quickly grown into a beloved brand, with cafés in Berlin and over 150 B2B partners across Europe.

Specialty’s Broken Promise? Sustainability in an Era of High Prices
Fri, 26.09 2025 • 15:00—16:00 • Main Stage
For years, high premiums were the proof of sustainability in specialty coffee. But with today’s high commodity prices, that narrative no longer works. This panel of producers, traders, and roasters explore how the industry can prove their specialty coffees are sustainable. Speakers : Hannes Fendrich-Sander (Head of Coffee, Coffee Circle) Hannes has been the "Head of Coffee" at Coffee Circle since 2013, responsible for green coffee purchasing and managing the roastery. Jeanine Niyonzima (Founder of JNP Coffee, Licensed Q Grader & Q Processor Level 1, SCA Board of Directors) Jeanine Niyonzima-Aroian, owner, and manager of JNP Coffee, advances the global specialty coffee industry and farmers in her native Burundi, East Africa, by producing, promoting, and trading the specialty coffee grown there. A strong advocate for women coffee farmers in Burundi, she supports high-quality production through Dushime® premium incentives for high-scoring coffee, lessons in financial literacy, and leadership skills. Cristian Reyes (Founder of CSS Coffee Sourcing Solutions) From production, consultancy, owning a coffee shop and a roasted coffee brand at origin, to being a café manager and running an import business in Europe, Cristian has been involved in almost the entire coffee chain.
